The Right Offense

A brief comment regarding McChrystal.  I think the President should refuse his resignation.  If we are indeed committed to the war in Afghanistan, a chaotic leadership change in the middle of the most important year of the war immediately preceding the most important offensive of the war is a good idea on no level unless there’s some sort of McArthur situation, which there is not.  McChrystal didn’t commit treason, he just allowed a Rolling Stone reporter too much access.  If there’s a reason to fire McChrystal, it’s his adoption of certain rules of engagement—such as arbitrary restrictions on where soldiers can patrol and requirement that unarmed person necessarily be identified as civilians that essentially handcuff our troops on the battlefield.  Either fire him for that or don’t fire him a’tall.
